They have over half a million followers on Twitter, thousands of dedicated screaming fans and weekly praise from Gary Barlow and co but X Factor favourites Union J reckon they were once the worst act in the competition!
The band, who were put together at Judges Houses, reckon they have improved ten fold since the first live show. Speaking to The Sun this weekend, Jaymi Hensley revealed the band's insecurities:
“Week one we sat at the sound check and said, ‘We are the weakest act here’ – because we were! So now, to have got to the quarter-finals and be up against James Arthur and Jahmene Douglas and not be the weakest act is amazing. We’ve really progressed.”
The boys wowed the crowd and judges once again last night with their renditions of Jackson 5’s' I’ll Be There' and 'The Winner Takes It All' by Abba.
JJ Hamblett said at the beginning of the series the group felt they would never gain the attention of the audience, saying: “We really thought we were only here to make up the numbers. But now we feel we’re right in the middle of things.”
Whilst the boys have pretty much sailed through to the final stages of the show, with the exception of one bottom two blip, their best mate Ella Henderson wasn't so lucky. The group admit they were devastated when Ella was voted off in a shock deadlock last weekend:
“That was the biggest shock ever in X Factor history," Ella's rumoured love interest George Shelley admits.
Josh Cuthbert added that seeing James Arthur in the bottom two was also hard: “It was bittersweet for us because we were chuffed to get through but they are our two best friends in the show. We’ve got so close, so we were devastated – it was like watching your big brother and your little sister in the sing-off."
"We were gutted for Ella – we were in tears backstage, we absolutely adore her.”
Despite the shock the boys admit it has given them confidence that they can go all the way to the final with Jaymi saying: “The aim of this game is to win it and that’s it and that’s what we want to do. I don’t think there’s anything stopping us from getting to the final because James and Ella were in the bottom two and we weren’t. So to be above them – and yes, people might have thought they were safe – but we’re doing something right."
"We want to fight for this. And based on how much we want it and how hard we work, I don’t see why we can’t get to the final.”
What do you think? Will Union J be the 2012 winners?
