The X Factor’s Christopher Maloney: It took me five years to audition

On Saturday's X Factor, 34-year-old Christopher Maloney wowed the judges and viewers alike with his incredible rendition of 'The Rose' after it looked as if his nerves would get the better of him.

Speaking exclusively to omg! today, Christopher admitted that it had taken him years to find the courage to audition.

He told us: "It took me five years to audition and pluck up the courage."

"I tried singing when I was younger and it didn't work out. I lost that dream but my Nan has always believed in me and said 'do it' so I bit the bullet and went ahead and auditioned."

When Christopher took to the stage he was unable to hide his nerves, visibly trembling when he spoke to the judges. Christopher explains that these nerves came from a loss of confidence in himself.

He explained: "I think that I just stopped believing in myself. As you get older you start to lose confidence, you start to lose belief in yourself."

"This is the biggest thing I've ever done in my life and the amount of pressure that your under was unreal. People would say, 'you're going to embarrass yourself, you're going to embarrass your friends and family if you go and do it'."

However, Christopher ignored his detractors and auditioned leading to some incredible feedback from the judges, leaving the singer stunned.

He said: "I think with the feedback, I don't take compliments well, so for the judges to compliment me on my singing and performance was just overwhelming."

"Any other person would take it on board but I seem to just let it brush over my head, it goes in one ear and out the other and I think that's my problem- I should be enjoying it."

When we asked Christopher which judge's feedback meant the most to him, the singer was quick to choose.

"Gary, he is fantastic, he is an excellent musician, a great artist and song writer. I've got a lot of respect for the man."

"I've got a lot of respect for all the judges that were there that day. But the one that got me that day was Gary."
