Smith has 'no plans to leave' Doctor Who

Actor Matt Smith insists he has "no plans to leave" hit show Doctor Who following the departure of his co-star Karen Gillan.

The redheaded actress, who plays the Time Lord's sidekick Amy Pond, announced last year that she will be leaving the show in 2012, along with Arthur Darvill, who plays her onscreen husband Rory Williams.

But despite her exit, Smith is adamant that he's happy to continue his role in the hit sci-fi series for the foreseeable future.

He tells DigitalSpy, "I always knew that me and Karen would have slightly different journeys in the show. People say, 'Are you not sad?' I am sad because I have enjoyed (working) with Karen and Arthur, they are wonderful guys. But the show is bigger than all of us actors in it.

"It's bigger than everyone in it and it will continue far longer, way after me. I am here for a very small period of time. I'm here for the future, I love working on the show. I have no plans to leave."

But despite confirming his commitment to the series, Smith has revealed that he hopes to make a move into films within the next year.

He adds, "I've got a year of Who and then I'll take it from there really. I am interested in films, I've always loved the idea and process of films and I am actually interested in directing."

For me, Matt Smith is up there with David Tennant. They've both been brilliant in their portrayals, both very different and equally appealing. Tennant was starting to grate on me somewhat in the lattar stages of his series, but that felt more down to Russell Davies's writing becoming increasingly silly. I hope Smith does stick around for a little while.

Tennant was one of the best, you could put Tennant along in line with the rest of the legends: Baker, Pertwee, Mccoy, and all but the same cannot be said 4 Smith, and it's obvious 2 admit that Smith did not follow and advance from Tennant- sad but true- I mean it took him this along 2 win at least one award from one of the greatest revivals ever, But I will give credit 2 Moffat's other project: Sherlock- Brilliant, him and also Mark Gattiss- but when it comes to the last 2 series of Dr.Who since Tennant left, unfortunately all credit is lost there!

since Russell T Davies left, the series has gone down hill! Steven Moffat hasn't got a clue about how to make the show! Matt Smith is a good Doctor, but Karen Gillan was rubbish and the stories have been over-complicated. My kids still watch it, but my interest in the show is waning!!

No it hasn't.The Steven Moffat era is by far better than any of the RTD era.It involves time travel more than RTD era for a start. And it has more heart(see "The girl who waited"),better characters(Amy,Rory,Winston Churchill etc). Most of the episodes are better(God complex,The Doctor's wife, the big bang etc) and the monsters are better(Silence being the best example).

People moaned and complained that RTD was gradually flushing DW down the toilet (which he was, it was going childish and silly) and he needed to go. He went. People wanted Steven Moffatt because he'd written some of the best episodes (i.e. Blink, Dalek, Girl in the Fireplace etc) and he would freshen it up. He took over and freshened it up. Then they moan about him and want RTD back. Guess some people will never be satisfied.

he wasn't as bad as I thought he would be. However, of recent doctors, David Tennant was the best by far.
