Rockers Radiohead have sent their best wishes to protesters at an economic rally in New York after dismissing rumours they were set to perform a surprise set on Friday as a show of solidarity.
Activists set up camp in lower Manhattan as part of the ongoing Occupy Wall Street campaign, rallying against social inequality, and rumours began swirling online early on Friday suggesting the band was planning to make an unannounced appearance to play a mini-set.
Many celebrity fans took to their Twitter.com blogs to spread the word, including rap mogul Russell Simmons, who wrote, "rumor is that Radiohead will be playing at #OccupyWallStreet rally at Liberty Sq., NYC at 4PM TODAY!"
The reports proved to be a hoax, but Radiohead have tweeted their words of support to campaigners.
In a post on Friday afternoon, the band wrote, "We wish the best of luck to the protesters there, but contrary to earlier rumours, we will not be appearing today at #occupywallstreet."
