Nixon 'chose' to live life as a lesbian

Actress Cynthia Nixon refuses to bow to pressure from the gay community to change her opinion that her homosexuality is a "choice", despite facing criticism for her beliefs.

The Sex and the City star enjoyed a 15-year romance with her college sweetheart Danny Mozes - the father of her daughter Samantha, 15, and nine-year-old son Charlie - until their split in 2003. She then fell for Christine Marinoni in 2004, and the couple has been engaged to wed since 2009.

Nixon, who also has an 11-month-old son, Max, with Marinoni, is convinced her change in sexual preference was just that - a preference - because she considers herself a heterosexual who simply fell in love with a woman.

Her assertion has irked some gay rights activists, who insist being gay is a compulsion - but Nixon is standing firm in her beliefs.

In a candid interview with the New York Times Magazine the actress says, "I gave a speech recently, an empowerment speech to a gay audience, and it included the line, 'I've been straight and I've been gay, and gay is better.'

"And they tried to get me to change it, because they said it implies that homosexuality can be a choice. And for me, it is a choice. I understand that for many people it's not, but, for me, it's a choice, and you don't get to define my gayness for me.

"A certain section of our community is very concerned that it not be seen as a choice, because if it's a choice, then we could opt out. I say it doesn't matter if we flew here or we swam here, it matters that we are here and we are one group and let us stop trying to make a litmus test for who is considered gay and who is not.

"Why can't it be a choice? Why is that any less legitimate? It seems we're just ceding this point to bigots who are demanding it, and I don't think that they should define the terms of the debate.

"I also feel like people think I was walking around in a cloud and didn't realise I was gay, which I find really offensive. I find it offensive to me, but I also find it offensive to all the men I've been out with."

Well if she says it's a choice for her, then it is for her. She's probably bisexual.

wouldn't that make her bisexual then?

Why can't people understand that being gay is a choice for some and not for others?!

That is bisexuality for you. The ability to be with both sexes. Sex wise, or with emotions involved and whatever else. But the previous two suggestions are the main reasons. I call myself bisexual and I have been so for two years now and I am 28. Even after when I fell in love with my ex girlfriend, I had a relationship with a guy for a year. I broke up with him in the summer and after that, most people I kissed or 'went further' were women. I assume that Nixon does not like to label or tag herself or anyone else. I don't even FEEL bisexual. I feel that I am as me.

Ofc its a choice. Everything is a choice.. However its not a choice wether or not you are gay. Its a choice if you wish to follow your feelings or deny them with fear of how others react. Thats the only choice.

Just brings it all back down to reality. Homosexuality IS a choice, and is only sometimes genetically determined (although this can be reversed with adequate therapy). These "gay activists" know that damn well.

If she feels that for her it was a choice, then fine, we should just leave her alone rather than try to get her to change her position on the issue.

And what's the problem ? She likes women and that is her choice, end of story. Live with it.

I think what she means is we can't choose who we are attracted to but in the end we do make a choice. Whether we live, lying to ourselves, or whether we be honest.. I totally get it.

Why does she need do label herself as anything? She is who she is. No one has the right to dictate to her. She knows the workings of her mind and sexuality better than anyone. I find it quite hypocritical that gay community tried to make her alter her speech so it would mesh with the views of those present. They are a community that 'apparently' glorifies freedom and the rights of the individual. But is it only when it fits with the accepted views of the majority?

There is 'right' way to be gay and no 'right' way to be straight.

the only 'right' way to be is true to yourself.

... hmm. Not sure what to make of this, but when I first read the headline I thought it was going to be something about President Richard Nixon being a lesbian. Which is really, really odd but somewhat amusing at the same time. For the record, as a woman who has dated both men and women, I was always attracted to both genders on some level. I realised I was attracted to women at a relatively young age, but whatever. Let her think what she wants. Why should I really give a #$%$
