Viewers of the X Factor experienced a blast from the past when Carolynne Poole returned to the show for a second year in a bid to make it big in the music industry.

Speaking about her decision to return to the show in her VT, Carolynne, who was so close yet so far when Louis Walsh decided to send her home at the judges house round last year, said:

"I don’t think Louis thought I was a star, I was heartbroken. Looking back now though, I know that last year I was a blank, there was nothing behind my eyes. I was just like shut off.

"Last year, myself and my husband had been through IVF and it had failed, then my marriage was in tatters. I had lost him and I had lost the hope of a family and I had lost the hope of a career singing."

Recognised by judges Gary Barlow, Tulisa Contostavlos and Louis Walsh, the hopeful performed her rendition of Emeli Sande's 'Clown'.

Being the first to comment on Carolynne's performance, Louis, who also explained his decision not to take her through last year, told her:

"You’re looking better and your sounding better, I think you have got your confidence back. I loved the audition."

Echoing Louis' sentiments that she gave a good audition, Tulisa told Carolynne: "Whatever Louis thought was missing, I think this year, you’ve got it.

"I feel like I know you more in the however many minutes you have been up there than the whole time you were in the competition before, it’s just like a complete new you and I love it."

Equally impressed with Carolynne's performance, Gary added: "The overs category is going to be incredible this year, and you are going to be the dark horse of this competition."

Mel B, who has been hard to impress during her time as a guest judge on the show, told Poole: "I know you have been through a lot and you have got a lot of pain and hurt, every word you made mean something and that is very endearing to see in a performer and your voice tops it off, it’s just beautiful. Absolutely beautiful.

"Whatever you are going through, use it and make it work for you."
