Jason: 'Only Depp could save American Fools & Horses'

Beloved actor Sir David Jason believes Johnny Depp is the only star who could save a planned American remake of his internationally-acclaimed TV comedy show Only Fools & Horses.

Jason insists the very idea of revamping his cult show for an American audience is a terrible idea - but he'd be more inclined to watch if Depp took on his lovable rogue character Del Boy Trotter.

The veteran tells the BBC, "They can do brilliant comedy (in America) but I don't see that they can bring off Fools & Horses (sic). I don't see that it will travel across the pond.

"It might work but you've got to change it so much that, in the change, in order to Americanise it, do you lose the whole concept of the piece? The language will have to change so much and there will be so many parts of the storyline you have to change.

"It's so London and so British... It's London based and it took quite a long time for the rest of the country (Britain) to catch up with the phrases."

Asked if there was anyone who could fill Del Boy's shoes, Jason adds, "You would never get him because he's too big but I'd go for Johnny Depp because he's such a good actor."

Only Fools & Horses was voted Britain's favourite sitcom of all time in 2004 - a year after it went off air after more than two decades.

I think Del Boy has got it right - what an awful show the americanised version will be - it wont bear any similarities to our classic Only Fools

Well I for one would like to see Only Fools and Horses return to the screens but not just in America but worldwide. I think the idea of an American version sounds good but only if it was in animated form with Kelsey Grammar and David Hyde Pierce in the roles of the two brothers and René Angélil as the uncle. If David Jason himself wrote it and Seth McFarlane directed it the rest would just fall into place.

Your comments prove exactly why it won't work. Seth McFarlane is a vulgar #$%$ Only Fools is a family tv show. The two brothers are POOR, working class wheeler-dealers, not pseudo upper crust luvvies!

Yeah but 'Family Guy' and 'The Simpsons' are perfect examples of working class families. The David Hyde Pierce and Kelsey Grammar bit is a nod to 'Frasier'. I mean you can change the format of the show a little bit just not too much because who has heard Kelsey as Sideshow Bob in 'The Simpsons'? Is he not good at an English accent? Also who remembers the only true finale episode 'Time on Our Hands' at the end when Del Rodney and Albert were originally meant to become cartoon characters? Besides what we want more of is the episodes and with the great John Sullivan gone who better than to take his place as writer than the legendary David Jason? After all he has been in the show since the beginning. Nicholas Lyndhurst could produce it.

This is what I'm talking about. Make the show into a cartoon and let the Americans do the voices but let the original actors write produce and be the crew.

Sorry Bigbird, British comedy has always been eons ahead of American . They do have some inovations such as Modern Family and Big Bang Theory. Canadians adore British productions because they are intelligent and well acted. Can you do better? or are you one of those couch potatoe professionals?

I also think the American remake wont hold a candle to the classic UK Only Fools....mainly as its a product of its time and country! Plus will any americans be huddling around the TV on Christmas Day to watch The Queens Speech, A James Bond film and an episode of Only Fools and Horses? Doubt it!

America doesn't have the same sence of humour as us. Why remake it?
    • deere23  •  Manchester, England  •  3 months ago
Definition of Re-make: Somethig Americans have to do as they don't have an original idea when it comes to screen entertainment and anything without an American accent is beyond imagination.

Only fools cannot be 'remade'. The reason it was successful was not the brilliant script, not the comedy, but the fact that we, the British public fell in love with Del, Rodders, Grandad and Uncle Albert. Americans will not 'get' why we love it. It is a purely British thing. Americans might like it, but it is far more than liked in the UK. It is almost woven into the British identity. I have NEVER heard a single person say 'I don't like Only Fools'. It just doesn't happen! It is probably the most popular tv show ever made in this country. Go on holiday to Spain, Greece, and it is on tv out in the bars at the British holiday,Akers request! It was made in the 80's and 90's! David Jason may be the only actor to get a State Funeral :)

        Sorry, 'holiday makers'.

the theme of two brothers living with an elderly relative will work well anywhere, the actual jokes and language however wont translate well at all

The problem would be that American humour is not the same as British, they could do a good job of it, they could base it in New York in a seedy area for example. The USA has made some classic comedies, (sienfeld, cheers for example) so it could work. You just need the right settings and characters. In a country that size they must have del boys !!
      • FrankG 3 months ago
Yes. Step toe and son / Sanford and son is a good example where it did work.

Well one thing is for sure - he won't have to worry about the US remaking The Royal Bodyguard!
