Hagman turns vegan to fight cancer

Actor Larry Hagman has shed 25 pounds after turning vegan in a bid to overcome cancer.

The Dallas legend announced in October he is receiving treatment for the illness and he overhauled his lifestyle following the diagnosis.

Hagman is convinced his new diet is helping him beat the disease, insisting: "I'm feeling great and I'm back on track."

He tells the Mail On Sunday, "I've finished treatment and the doctors are thrilled with my progress. My outcome looks very positive. It's my firm intention to whop cancer into submission and I truly believe I've given myself the best start possible by radically overhauling my diet and by staying true to my motto, which is: Don't worry, be happy, feel good.

"The first thing I did when I was diagnosed was to turn vegan. Now I live on fresh vegetable drinks which taste like c**p but which I firmly believe have helped me get through this thing.

"I'm down in weight from 14 stone 9 pounds to 12 stone 12 pounds but am feeling great. I fully anticipate getting the all-clear from my doctors sooner rather than later. I exercise every morning. I do light weights - five pound and 10 pound arm exercises - and then lie and lift my arms and legs. It's all about keeping core strength. I do a lot of stretching too."

The 80 year old has also credited his Dallas co-star Linda Gray with helping him make the changes.

He adds, "Linda knows a lot about nutrition and she was the one who said if I really wanted to get through this, I had to purify my body and then feed it well.

"I have this wonderful personal chef who sources and stocks all my organic produce and I basically live on five smoothies a day. I'm totally vegan. I blend this green concoction with kale, cucumber, broccoli, string beans, avocado. My protein comes from protein powder. There is absolutely no milk, butter, cheese.

"Meat is out. When you learn about these things, you find out how meat is pumped full of steroids and human growth hormones."

Fair play to him! If he feels that this will help him and it feels right then why not, he is being positive and trying to fight it. Unfortunately he may lose, but being positive goes a long way. My mother is currently suffering from pancreatic cancer, for which there is no positive outlook and is just a matter of time. So if you can turn a negative in to a positive then surely that is a good thing? Good luck to him!

Good for him. As a vegetarian myself, I can recommend a meat-free diet. Now that he's vegan, he has a very good chance of beating cancer and living to a ripe old age. 80 not out, Mr. Hagman.

Errrr - not really. Loads of good vitamins and minerals can only be found in meat, fish, chicken and eggs. The benefits of eating a diet high omega fish oils have been proven for years. Cut out #$%$ like alcohol, sugar and processed foods by all means as the human body does not react well to them, but cutting out entire food groups can be very dangerous

If it was that easy to beat cancer, why don't doctors insist on it being part of the treatment? Fair play to him, though, for being so positive and exercising at his age. I hope he recovers.

People should be seriously careful when following these diets. OK this guy is fighting cancer but a friend of mine was vegan and she nearly died.
If you want to change your lifestyle, get your doctor involved.

Also, it all depends on the type of cancer. Clearly he's fortunate not to have the deadlier type of cancer with only single percentage figures for survival after treatment. In fact so far he's refused to divulge to say exactly what type of cancer he's contracted, but has admitted:
"I do want everyone to know that it is a very common and treatable form of cancer."

A Vegan diet is not to be dismissed when a healthy diet is essential to the patent's recovery, but the type of cancer he's hinting at, is not necessarily dependant on a vegan diet to overcome it.

One of the worst and most aggressive types of cancer is Cancer of the Pancreas and has only a 4% survival rate 5 years after first receiving treatment, I'd like to see a Vegan diet beat those odds.

"..When you learn about these things, you find out how meat is pumped full of steroids and human growth hormones."

      - And crops are sprayed with antibiotics.

No wonder the nation is becoming more obese - everything we buy and eat from the supermarkets is already poisioned to hell!
