Coldplay named U.K.'s highest-selling rock act

Coldplay have been named the U.K.'s highest-selling rock act of the last 12 months.

The band's chart-topping track Paradise was the nation's most popular guitar anthem of 2011 and their album, Mylo Xyloto, sold more copies than any other rock act, according to statistics released by The Official Charts Company.

Former Oasis star Noel Gallagher claimed second place in the album rundown with his debut solo offering Noel Gallagher's High Flying Birds, ahead of Florence & The Machine's Ceremonials and Foo Fighters' Wasting Light at three and four respectively.

The top five is rounded out by Mumford & Sons' hit album Sigh No More.

Coldplay boast two songs in the top five rock singles of 2011 - Paradise at number one and Every Teardrop Is A Waterfall at four.

Other artists to feature include the Goo Goo Dolls, Birdy and Noah & The Whale.

I agree, most of them aren't rock bands. Rock nowadays comes from Enter Shikari, My Chemical Romance, Green Day, All Time Low, Slipknot, Muse etc. I might be a middle-aged woman, but I don't call middle-of-the road middle-aged music "rock".

They're a rock band as they play rock music with conventional instruments (guitars, bass and drums) as opposed to being technology-based and playing pop tunes. Rock's not having too good a time of it at the moment; it had its worst year sales-wise last year for more than fifty years. Pop and hip hop currently rule the roost and rock is struggling.

I'm a huge fan of rock music but even I have to admit that it seems to be petering out. I haven't heard a really good rock album since Muse's 'Black holes and Revelations' a few years back and Kasabian knocked out a good album in "west ryder...". I guess all the kids these days look up to rap/hip-hop artists and if their looking in to a career in music will always follow in the footsteps of their idols. I also feel that rap/hip-hop and general pop are easier and more appealing when it comes to the music video. People these days will buy songs on the strength of the video alone, sometimes it doesnt even matter if the song is rubbish. Whereas it seems most rock songs always seem to just have the band playing their instruments. Not very appealing these days when people have an attention span of a few seconds.

Since when have most of these actually been rock? Most of them are making music for the middle-aged. Foo Fighters, yes; Coldplay or Mumford and Sons - are you having a laugh?

Sorry, but if it ain't in Kerrang magazine, it ain't rock!

      Geez how embarrassing.

Once upon a time Britain had The Beatles, Led Zeppelin, The Rolling Stones, The Who, Pink Floyd.

      Now we have..................Coldplay.

      What a come down.

Foo Fighters are the only actual Rock act in the top 5 above. Not enough expletives available for me to describe Coldplay here.
