Daniel Radcliffe: I was drunk during Harry Potter filming, it was bad

Daniel Radcliffe has confessed to being drunk during the filming of Harry Potter scenes.

The Hollywood star revealed he was drinking "a lot" during that period and would often go into work still under the influence of the booze from the night before.

The 22-year-old, who hasn't touched alcohol since 2010, told Heat magazine: "I have a very addictive personality. It was a problem.

"People with problems like that are very adept at hiding it. It was bad. I don't want to go into details, but I drank a lot and it was daily — I mean nightly.

"I can honestly say I never drank at work on Harry Potter. I went into work still drunk, but I never drank at work. I can point to many scenes where I'm just gone. Dead behind the eyes."

Daniel Radcliff has confessed to being still drunk during filming

And he explained that he had no choice but to go completely teetotal back in August 2010. He added: "You either have to change something or give into that shame."

The Brit, who is currently doing promo for his first film since the Potter franchise, The Woman In Black, also revealed to Shortlist magazine this week that he was a recluse who blacked out each time he drunk.

He said: "The drinking was unhealthy and damaging to my body and my social life. That's beyond question.

"I was living in constant fear of who I'd meet, what I might have said to them, what I might have done with them, so I'd stay in my apartment for days and drink alone.

"I was a recluse at 20. It was pathetic — it wasn't me. I'm a fun, polite person and it turned me into a rude bore.

"In the last three years of drinking I blacked out nearly every time. Blacking out was my thing."

Daniel says his girlfriend Rosie has helped him a lot/Wenn

And Dan has revealed his girlfriend Rosie Coker has helped him greatly. He told heat she was "a wonderful, wonderful girl, who's far too good for me" adding: "I can also be quite insecure.

"A lot of actors have self-doubt. I live under that the whole time, and it's how I function best. I think she puts up with a lot; she says she doesn't."

Check back here on Monday for our exclusive interview with Daniel Radcliffe on friendship with Rupert Grint, his fans and what Rosie bought him as a gift...

well i think its quite good of him to admit he had a drinking problem , i see on here lots of bad comments about him why ? cos hes rich ? rich poor it dont matter , a problem is a problem and you have to face it and deal with it , think about the pressure hes under being in the spot light all the time , in my job i see lots of diff people and ill tell you this , people who dont have a lot are more happy than the ones that are loaded , its your attitude to life and being grateful for havin a decent partner wife or husband that makes you happy not money , my gf is the best thing that ever happend to me , all go awwwwwwww but its true

This is a young man who will be a top actor for many years.
Admitting he had a problem that he successfully dealt with does him great credit.

Please don't use the term Hollywood star, this lad is as British as they come. Use the the term British Star in future. Why is it that you media people always put Hollywood in front of anyone who has been in a film made by a Hollywood studio.
His parents were reluctant to let him appear in Harry Potter when it was first mooted. Why, because it was going to be made in Hollywood, and they did not like the idea of an 11 year old spending a large part of the year in America. It was only when it was going to be filmed in the UK, they said yes. The Harry Potter films are in all sense and purposes British, with British stars, British sets and a very British story.
Lets hope that he can get over his problem, and continue to have a productive life. At least he can Act, unlike some Hollywood stars.

Too bad he felt the need to get his kit off. Nasty decision of a child actor.
      • SETH 3 months ago
He wasn't a child actor at that time.

Okay, so he had a drinking problem for a short time - who can honestly say they wouldn't as one of the richest, most famous young men in the world? The good thing is that he has been able to cut back and as the article mentioned he hasn't had any alcohol since 2010.

Odd to think that when we [humans] start to go onto solids (as babies), we start to make alcohol in our gut; from food sugars and natural bacteria. There is no such thing, never has been and never will be, anybody [human and all mammals] that do not have alcohol in their system. Avoid 'topping up', yes; but impossible to avoid it as a part of our being (no offence meant to any muslims out there, but it's a medical and true fact folks, sorry).

Good luck to the bloke he looks to have sorted himself out now and settled down.
He's getting on with his life and as a role model he's telling youngesters that drinking is a fools game and that can only have positive affect.

Good for you Daniel. Enjoy the rest of your life. A case of too much too soon. These kids need better handling and the odd kick of reality when they are so young.Pushy parents dont help. They are as much to blame as the film industry.Always happens when they need youngsters in movies.

Surely there are laws, and guidlines in place within the film industry to monitor and protect child, teen and under 18's in the business, and help try to avoid situations like this arising? Obviously they'd not be 100% effective, nothing ever is, but a massively high profile example like this you'd have though could have been spotted very early indeed and dealt with appropriately. Or do the self serving do gooders and pc brigade only target the lower classes with their thought control programmes ?

Good to admit it, good to be facing and overcoming it. No-one can understand the life he's led, so young, apart from maybe his 2 co-stars.
