Robert Downey Jr and wife welcome son, give him interesting name

Robert Downey Jr and his wife Susan have joined the unusual baby name brigade with the birth of their son on Tuesday in Los Angeles.

The couple named their new addition Exton Elias Downey, his rep confirmed to People.

The past few months have seen a batch of interesting baby names, from the unusual like Blue Ivy to the retro like Ethel Mary and the rock-star-inspired like Bowie.

A friend of Robert and Susan's said: "Everyone is healthy and they couldn't be happier."

Exton weighed 7 lbs., 5 oz. and was 20 inches long.

He joins Robert's son from his previous marriage, 18-year-old Indio.

The couple announced the pregnancy in August and Robert let slip the gender of the baby on TV.

He did manage to keep the name a secret until the birth, however, saying of his wife: "If I told you the name, then she would lop off my head with a machete."

Congrats to Robert and Susan on their new arrival!

Why is Ethel bad? Names are like clothes and design. They come back into fashion sooner or later. Kaylee or Makayla will also sound out-of-date in 20-30 years.

When i was pregnant with my 2nd child, my mother said that if it was a girl she rather liked the name of Tess. but one has to consider whether a first name goes well with the surname. In my case it would have been rather embarrassing when my daughter was born and i had gone with my mothers wishes, especially as my surnname is Stickells!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I don't think this name sounds bad but I wouldn't know whether Exton is a boy or a girl without the middle name. Unisex-sounding names are confusing and can cause embarrassment.

It's a Shakespearean name which means: 'King Richard The Second'. I don't think you would have a girl call called 'King Richard' ;-)

This name is not too bad, but some are ridiculous.
But I often wonder do these people ever think ahead on how their child(ren) will cope at school with some of the names they choose!

    • Dannyy  •  Redditch, England  •  3 months ago
Personally I think it's a pretty cool name! Different yes, but not in a bad way. And anybody that says they don't even know who this is, has obviously been living under a rock, that or has no interest in the movie industry. Congrats to them both!

That's not too bad. On the other hand, will we now see even more silly names - whatever next - names like Biscuit Crumbs, Cat Litter, Doggie Doo, purrrlleease. Remember these kids have to put up with a lot of flack when they grow up. Why can't stars be normal!!!
